Né en 1913, en Croatie, formé à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Zagreb, Slavko Kopac voit son nom généralement associé à son rôle de conservateur de la Collection de l'art brut fondée par Jean Dubuffet. Pourtant, l'artiste croate a laissé derrière lui une oeuvre dont la richesse rencontre la complexité du siècle qu'il a traversé. Émigré en Italie en 1943, puis installé à Paris en 1948, où il côtoie les surréalistes, il explore les techniques et les matériaux les plus inattendus en une poétique du merveilleux.

Cet ouvrage, première monographie de l'artiste, mort à Paris en 1995, met au jour la vie et le travail , d'un créateur méconnu au centre des grands enjeux de la modernité.

Born in 1913 in Croatia, where he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Slavko Kopac has been associated by and large with his role as the curator of the Collection of art brut, founded by Jean Dubuffet. Yet the Croatian artist left behind a fecund body of work on par with the complexity of the century it spanned. Emigrating to Italy in 1943, then settling in Paris in 1948, where he crossed paths with the surrealists, he enlisted the most unexpected techniques and materials in the service of a poetics of the marvelous.

The first monograph published on the artist, who died in Paris in 1995, this book brings to light the life and the work of a lesser known creator at the nexus of the major issues of modernity.
