À travers plus de deux cents impressions d'époque, le volume présente un large éventail, exhaustif et inédit, de l'oeuvre de Brassaï.

Hongrois de naissance mais parisien d'adoption, Brassaï - pseudonyme de Gyula Halász - fut l'un des principaux acteurs de la photographie du XX^e siècle, celui que son ami Henry Miller surnommait « l'oeil vivant ».

Ses clichés d'un Paris mystérieux sont célèbres. Dévoilés par l'éclairage public, enveloppés dans la brume ou baignés par la pluie, ils offrent un témoignage sur l'atmosphère nocturne qui régnait dans la capitale à son époque. Mais Brassaï a également voyagé dans l'Europe entière, en Italie et en Espagne entre autres, et aux États-Unis, laissant derrière lui des photographies qui portent l'empreinte de sa curiosité et de son style.

Sa production est proposée ici, de ses premiers clichés influencés par le mouvement surréaliste aux iconiques images de Paris dans ses habits voluptueux et mondains. Une attention particulière a été portée aux « graffiti », immortalisés par Brassai lors de ses explorations des murs parisiens, révélateurs de son attachement aux arts visuels et à des artistes comme Jean Dubuffet. Enfin, les photographies dédiées au nu féminin, à la mode, aux portraits de ses amis artistes et d'enfants, et ces petits paradoxes et sculptures involontaires que la réalité offrait à son regard et que Brassaï, créateur d'images, savait saisir dans l'immédiateté de l'instant.

Through more than two hundred vintage photographie prints, this volume presents an in-depth and original window into Brassaïs oeuvre.

Hungarian by birth but Parisian by adoption, Brassaï - the pseudonym of Gyula Halász - was one of the absolute protagonists of 20th-century photography, defined by Henry Miller as a « living eye ». Renowned are his glimpses of a mysterious Paris, illuminated by streetlamps, enveloped in fog or slick with rain, bearing witness to the nocturnal atmosphere that permeated the French capital of the time ; but Brassai travelled all over Europe - including to Italy and Spain - as well as to the United States, creating a photographic trail that bears the imprint of his curiosity and his style.

The full chronological range of his production is unveiled here, from his first shots influenced by an affinity with the Surrealist movement to his iconic images of Parisian pleasure-seekers and socialites. Particular attention is given to his images of « graffiti », captured by Brassai during his decades-long exploration of the walls of Paris, a mark of his bond with the visual arts and artists such as Jean Dubuffet. Finally, the photographs dedicated to the female nude and to fashion, portraits of artist friends and children, and the small paradoxes and « involuntary sculptures » that reality offered to his gaze and which Brassai, a creator of images, masterfully grasped in the immediacy of the moment.
