The French Institute of International Relations (Ifri) was launched in 1979 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The past four decades have profoundly altered the very bases of the international system, with the globalization of trade, technological revolutions, upheavals in the hierarchy of powers, the emergence of China, the explosion of the Middle East, mutations in conflicts and threats, climate concerns, etc. This special issue of Politique étrangère sets out the views of leading international specialists to highlight the key trends affecting a turbulent world. It looks at where we are heading, as well as what the international system and its components will look like in 10 years. What will the world be like in 2029 ?
